The closer you look, the more of nature begins to reveal itself.

At first glance, the vessel appears quite elemental. The concentric markings slowly emerge, spreading across the rounded form like growth rings, ripples in water, or patterns left by weather and time. Every angle reveals a different rhythm. 

 

From Feng Zheyuan’s newest series "Ripple", these vessels take inspiration from the concentric growth patterns of lingzhi (Ganoderma), a medicinal mushroom long-valued in East Asia. Rather than depicting the mushroom itself, Feng draws from its quiet rhythm of growth, extending his exploration of natural pattern through clay.

Material: Stoneware clay with hand-brushed mineral slip

Technique: Hand-thrown, finished with hand-brushed mineral slip

Care

Stoneware is naturally durable and nonporous. The brushed mineral slip gives the surface its distinctive texture and should be cared for gently.

Dust with a soft cloth. If displaying fresh flowers, empty standing water regularly and allow the interior to dry before storing. Avoid abrasive cleaners or polishing products, which may alter the character of the mineral surface.
Meet the maker

Feng works almost exclusively with flower vessels, returning to the same form repeatedly as an ongoing conversation with texture, proportion, and presence. His surfaces are expressive yet unforced, often finished with freely brushed slips that capture the emotions and intuition of the moment rather than a predetermined decorative pattern.
