The first thing you notice is the way this cup settles into your hand. 

Soft curves gather around the cup where Li Zhen pressed and shaped the clay by hand. Its grip feels instinctive. No two cups are exactly the same. The slight differences become part of the experience, making each piece personal. 

The spring greens drift gently across the porcelain, but it's the comfort of holding the cup that keeps you reaching for it. 

 

Part of the Mountains series, thrown in porcelain and finished with a white slip that lets the green glaze settle more gently after firing.

Technique: Hand-thrown, painted by hand, finished and glazed with Jingdezhen glaze materials
Fired between 1,240°C and 1,270°C

Care

Jingdezhen porcelain doesn't absorb water. It resists acid and bacteria by nature, fired hard enough to be nonporous.
A knock against a hard surface can crack it. Handle it the way you'd handle anything you cherish.
Wash by hand. Avoid steel wool or anything abrasive - it will scratch the glaze.
Meet the maker

Rather than treating decoration as ornament, Li Zhen paints with glaze. Soft greens, earthy browns, flowing brushstrokes and restrained forms evoke mountains, streams, gardens and changing seasons. Each vessel feels less like an object depicting nature than a quiet landscape held in the hand.
